When we think about virtualization we think about industry leaders such as VMware and Citrix. These companies are best known for their server and desktop virtualization. This technology has garnered a great deal of support and acceptance in the Information Technology space. This is primarily due to enhanced security, application management and hardware replacement savings. Over the past few years there has been a slow and gradual adoption — that has been nurtured by Open Kernel Labs — mobile virtualization.

Mobile Virtualization is technology that enables handset suppliers, operators and end-users get the most out of existing and emerging mobile hardware. It decouples mobile OSes and applications from the hardware they run on, enabling more secure, robust and flexible applications and services on less expensive devices today and deployment on advanced hardware tomorrow.

–Steve Subar — CEO and President of Open Kernel Labs (via Services Mobiles)

The launch of one of the most anticipated phones – arguably since the iPhone is about to drop. The Motorola Droid will be released on 11.6 and it will be sitting on the Verizon network. It will retail for $199 after a $100 mail-in-rebate. Best Buy (and Best Buy Mobile) is taking pre-orders and they will apply the $100 rebate instantly, which makes the Driod $199.99 with a two-year contract. If you are debating on making the switch from the iPhone, Bill Shrink has produced a detailed chart looking at four of industry’s most talked about phones – Droid, iPhone, Palm Pre, and MyTouch 3G.

When comparing the details, the iPhone and the Droid are nearly identical. Yes, the iTunes Store has 93, 200 apps as compared to the Android Market of 10, 000 apps but let’s face it – it’s not about the apps it’s about the network. AT&T has failed miserably in providing quality network support to the massive iPhone market. Just take a look at the Twitter hashtag #attfail and you will quickly understand the frustration.

I am seriously considering making the switch to Verizon. Not only because the Droid seems to be a solid phone but because Verizon seems to be better able to support its’ data hungry customers.
