The iPad is Heading Down to The Jersey Shore

this-is-the-situation-2

I love the “I am a Mac“ commercials and who doesn’t have a favorite or two. The chemistry between Justin Long — Mac and John Hodgman — PC is fantastic. Take180.com has done a wonderful parody of the “I am a Mac” commercials. Instead of Long and Hodgman it’s the iPad and Jersey Shore’s “The Situation.”

Take180.com posts 180 second (or less) web shows made by the community.

It’s a community where people come together to make awesome web shows. You power the episodes, by submitting stories, ideas, videos, photos and artwork — and/or commenting and voting on other people’s submissions. And hey — prizes happen. Episodes are never longer than 180 seconds and there are new ones all the time — just like TV.

Unfortunately, the Apple iPad will not be available for a few more months and I don’t think we will ever see an “I am an  iPad” commercial. Thanks to the folks at Take180.com we can at least get a good laugh.

Amazon Purchases NY Based Touchco to Compete with Apple?

500x_touchco-touchscreen_01

I find it curious that Amazon is taking the fight to Apple. In my professional opinion this is an unfair match — with Amazon being on the losing side. Perhaps therein lies the problem — Amazon is no longer the giant in this space. Yes, agreed Apple started the fight with the combination of price matching and service (iBook Store). Then to add insult to injury Macmillan gets cozy with Apple so I understand Amazon’s need to attack.

And Steve Jobs wasn’t being coy about it, saying this morning: “Amazon’s done a great job of pioneering this functionality with the Kindle. We’re going to stand on their shoulders and go a little further.”

The Apple iPad is an Innovation to be Seen and Had

steve_jobs

Steve Jobs did not disappoint with today’s unveiling of the latest Apple product – the iPad.

The specs:

  • Models: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB (flash storage)
  • Price: $499, $599 and $699, respectively (add-on another $130 if you want both Wi-Fi and 3G)
  • 1GHz Apple A4 chip
  • Wireless: 802.11n, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1
  • 10 hours of battery life
  • 1.5 pounds
  • .5 inches thick
  • 9.7 inch IPS display
  • Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating
  • You can get full specs here

Unfortunately, for us the iPad will not be available for 60 or 90 days. Your wait is dependent on what model you wish to purchase. From today’s announcement, it seems that the 3G iPad’s will be shipping in April and the WiFi models will be shipping in late March. The good news is that a data plan is available for the 3G iPad’s – for 250MB per month the cost will be $14.99 a month. If you are a data hog, you can go for the unlimited plan that will run you $29.99 a month. The bad news is that AT&T will be servicing the data plan. The silver lining is that there will be no contract.

The iPad is service and feature rich we will be looking at an iBook Store, Maps, iPod, Notes, Contacts, Calendar, Spotlight Search, Safari, Mail, iWork, SDK for developers, YouTube (HD), Photos, iTunes and access to over 140, 000 apps from the App Store. As far as an input device – you can either use your index finger or the big beautiful on-screen keyboard.  In Apple fashion they already have the official iPad site up and running.

The future for Blu-Ray, Apple, and Media Devices?

boxee-box_1

Your living room TV is under assault!

I am not talking about your kids throwing Wii remotes at it, or spouses sabotaging your inputs just in time for Sunday football, or not having any juice left in your rechargeable Logitech Harmony Remote, or even those tiny little fingerprints on the screen that make you go coo coo for cocoa puffs.  I am talking about the endless barrage of hardware media devices.

Devices like the D-Link Boxee Box, the  Syabas Technology Popcorn Hour, the Roku Player, AppleTV, Blu-ray players, Microsoft XBox 360, Sony PS3, Nintendo Wii, audio systems, Sonos ZonePlayer, Tivo, and other Cable/Verizon Fios/Satellite appliances.  Whew!  I need an entire circuit breaker just for my TV, and I still have a problem getting all of my content the way I want.

Apple Tablet To Come With Content Subscriptions

appleinternettv

So we pick up 2010 right where we left off 2009 – speculating what Jobs will be announcing on January 26th at the Yerba Buena Center. The hopes are set rather high that Jobs will make the announcement we have all been waiting for – the Apple tablet. Unfortunately, the pricing rumors are a bit unsettling. It has been reported that the price point could be anywhere between $700 to $900. According, Pete Cashmore Apple is plaining on selling 10 million tablets in 2010. I don’t see Apple selling 10 million units in 2010 at a price point nearly $1000.

What we can report with certainty is that Apple has been in talks with various publishers, broadcasters and movie studios to bring subscription based services to iTunes. The Wall Street Journal has reported that CBS and Disney are interested in partnering with Apple to provide TV subscription services. It’s still unclear how much Apple will charge for the TV subscription service – some are saying $30 a month. Additionally, it is unclear if CBS and Disney will be making their entire portfolio of TV shows available. My first guess would be no – we would see the availability of only a handful of shows. Apple plans to launch the TV subscription service sometime in 2010.

With Apple cutting these content deals and the tablet rumored to be coming in at just under $1000, are we really talking about an iPhone on steroids? I think we are more looking at an Apple media tablet. I am not just talking about the content already available on iTunes, that is a given. I am talking about news papers, text books, magazines all updated in real time, living stories and Internet TV - all operating on a 3G or 4G network; even white-space is a strong possibility.

I believe that the success of the Apple tablet will depend on a fine balance of price and content. Too much of one and not enough of the other and Apple will not be selling 10 million units in 2010.

Google Preempts CES With Early News

google600x400

January starts off 2010 with much excitement and anticipation. January 7th is the start of the Computer Electronics Show (CES). This is where vendors like Nikon will present their CoolPix S1000pj. January 26th Apple will be making a significant product announcement. It has been greatly speculated that Jobs will be announcing the long anticipated iSlate. Lastly, it has just been reported by ComputerWorld that on January 5th, Google will be holding an Android, invitation-only, event. The event will consist of  a press conference, presentations and question and answer sessions.

Some in the industry are speculating if Schmidt is purposely holding the Google conference right before CES. This is a similar move to what Jobs did in 2007 – when he announced the iPhone right before CES. In essence, the iPhone became all the talk at CES 2007.  I think that Schmidt is a smart man. This very well calculated move worked for Jobs and Schmidt is hoping it will do the same for the Nexus One.

It is still uncertian what Google will be presenting on January 5th. The speculation runs their entire portfolio – from the Nexus One to the Android Market Place to the Google Chrome OS netbook. Whatever, happens on the 5th one thing is certain - it will be all the talk at CES 2010.

Apple Tablet Announcement At Yerba Buena Center

apple-tablet-concept

The rumors are now getting fierce but partially supported by trusted sources. It is being argued that on January 26, 2010 Apple will be making a significant product announcement. Apple has rented the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, in late January.  When questioned, both the Yerba Buena Center and Apple declined to comment as to the nature of the event.

Over the last few hours I have been focusing on a few conversations. These talks claim that Apple has asked developers to create applications that will support full-screen resolution. What might this mean – perhaps the imminent product release of a 10.1″ Apple Tablet?

The Financial Times quoted Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, as saying

“We believe there is a 75 percent likelihood that Apple will have an event in January and a 50 percent chance that it will be held to launch the Apple Tablet,” Munster continued by stating, “If Apple announced the Tablet in January, it would likely ship later in the March quarter.”

So after all the speculation, conjecture and insider information we still sit here at the end of 2009, uncertain. If history is any indication, if nothing else, we will see a product announcement – maybe the rumored 5MP camera in the next iPhone?

iPhone Rumored For Release At WWDC 2010

wwdc-660x495

Rumors are abound about what Apple is planning to release come WWDC 2010 at the Moscone Center in California. The Worldwide Developer’s Conference is scheduled to take place June 28, 2010 to July 2, 2010. WWDC is an annual conference that is sponsored by Apple. It uses the conference to showcase new software and technologies for developers. Apple also takes this opportunity to offer hands-on labs and various feedback sessions.

There have been considerable iPhone rumors for the better part of 2009. The one rumor that has caught the attention of the many in the industry is, “is the iPhone going to Verizon?” We have heard other various unconfirmed iPhone stories such as – it being RFID/NFC enabled, having a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus and a front-facing camera – to just name a few. The most exciting of these stories is the long-awaited end of the Apple/AT&T exclusive contract.

The original iPhone was released in 2007 with an exclusive contract with AT&T. It’s not news that many in the iPhone community have had less than desirable service under AT&T’s rule. The stories are growing that not only will Apple open up the iPhone to all networks but that the latest iPhone may being siting on Verizon’s network or even T-Mobile’s network. Both companies explain that their networks can handle the additional bandwidth that the iPhone users are known for consuming.

What I find curious is that Google is partnering with T-Moble to sell the Nexus One. The Google phone also stands to be a bandwidth hog. If the rumors are true then the question begs “How will T-Mobile manage the bandwidth of these two phones?” In my opinion it could be disastrous for T-Mobile. I guess we will just have to be patient and wait for news from WWDC 2010.
