Google, founded in 1998, is one of the most powerful technology companies in the world. They have a rather robust portfolio which includes – advertising, Internet search, e-mail, maps, office productivity, social networking, open source web browser, mobile operating system and video sharing. Google’s revenue comes mainly from advertisement – from services such as Ad Words. As of 2008 figures – Google’s revenue is $21.796 billion. Not to bad for a research project started at Standford University by PhD students – Larry Page (President of Products) and Sergey Brin (President of Technology).
It’s a fair assessment that Google dominates search and advertising – now they are laying plans to do the same in the mobile space. We have seen the Android OS on mobile phones, before. Most notably Motorola’s Droid. It was almost as if Google was testing the mobile waters before taking the deep dive.
Google now steps into the mobile space with a vetted Android OS and it’s own hardware – manufactured by HTC. According to Mashable.com the Google phone (unofficially) is being called the “Nexus One.”
What is known so far is that not much is known. As of this post this is the information:
- [Rumor] Lunch date of January 2010
- Google employees are dogfooding the Nexus One
- Appears to be the HTC Dragon or Passion (which come with 3.7″ display, 5 megapixel camera and no physical keyboards)
- Appears to be running Android 2.1
- Appears to be unlocked
- Will function on AT&T’s 3G network
- T-Mobile’s will sell the Nexus One
- Appears to have a GSM chip set
- [Rumor] Verizon turned down the opportunity to support the Nexus One
- No pinch to zoom (no multi touch)
Yup, like I said not much is known about the mobile phone. Google is keeping this one close to home.
