Warning The Internet Is Not A Scary Place

Most of us have never know life without the Internet. Over the past few years the Internet has become a very intimate part of our lives. It has gone from a convenient piece of technology to a personal piece of technology. The Internet is readily accessible from almost any device in your possession today – PC, laptop, Internet Tablet and mobile device. This easy of access to the Internet is one of the key reasons for it’s undeniable popularity.
The obvious fear that parents have about the Internet are valid and to be respected. These are some of the top parental control applications:
Net Nanny Parental Controls
Safe Eyes
CyberSitter
CyperPatrol
MaxProtect
MacAff Parental Controls
FilterPak
imView
Norton Parental Controls
Parental Controls
While these applications should be considered as one way to protect your children – they should be considered the only protection. The most powerful piece of technology is your voice. As parents we must create the conversation with our children. We must explain that the Internet is not a bad place but that care must be taken when surfing it. Remember when our parents spoke to us about strangers? That is the same conversation we need to be having with our kids; today that conversation will be about not talking to digital strangers.

I am a 10 month old father so my "digital stranger" talk is still a few years away. One thing I have realized in speaking to other dads is that many of them have it wrong. Forbidding your child to go online or relying on technology to babysit him/her is wrong. We have to talk to our kids - educate them in what is right and wrong behavior. Yes, use technology to monitor their online habits but that is just a tool to be used and not to be relied on.

You make terrific points here. One day, my wife and I will need to have this "digital strangers" conversation with our daughter. She is only 3 right now, but that time will be here before we know it. I appreciate the parental control resources. Keep up the good work!
